FVWM: disappearing buttons after upgrade

I recently upgraded the OS on my pentium 166 from RedHat Linux 3.0.3 to
4.1 and, at the same time upgraded from fvwm-2.0.43 to 2.0.45.
Everything seemed to install smoothly, but now the FvwmButtons module no
longer works. It comes up briefly, then disappears with no messages or
warnings of any kind.

Any clues for the clueless?
