I just built png support into my Solaris version. It worked fine.
I installed libpng1.2.5.
I'm not root so it was not installed in a standard library.
During make I had:
export LD_OPTIONS="-L/usr/local/lib -R/usr/local/lib"
the -R is important so that Fvwm can find the library.
If you are still having problems, try to supply more information.
