The guy who started it was Rob Nation.
The earliest mentioning I could find on usenet dates to July of 1993.
The code was (as far as I know) based on twm.
It was designed to mimic mwm (Motif's WM), (but actually IMHO the default
window border handles look a bit like IRIX's 4dwm).
