Yes, the only thing I did in the failsafe terminal was to run fvwm2
(without "&")
Then I minimised it and logged out as usual using the menu and ran exit at
the terminal.

Yes, mouse is still active. If that's the case, it's none of my processes
(tried a ps -u, while logged on to the machine with ssh, only a bash...)
So this leaves the Xserver and perhaps some deamons..

Power cycle doesn't help.
Only root can restore it to a working state (AFAIK).
