I start it using gdm. I have added a session type named fvwm2 to gdm
and a file: /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/fvwm2 containing:
#!/bin/bash
# (c) 2001 Red Hat, Inc.
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2

This is on a RedHat 7.1 system running Linux 2.4.2-2
I will try again and see if this still happens, it might have been
something weird. I'm just to tired to do it now... (too much stuff to save
and so on to log out...)
