Is it fair to say that the correct problem statement is "FvwmCommandS"
exits prematurely?

If so, I seem to remember this being fixed sometime during the 2.1.x
beta series.

You can either try to debug this in your patched 2.0.46, or try out
the latest beta. It is possible that the 2.1.x FvwmCommand will work
with your patched 2.0.46.
