My guess is that acutally he is using a program that automatically
does an xhost + or something and therefore allows the windows to
display. Aa, you need to make sure you have permission to write to
your display if you want to remotely execute programs that use the
display. There are two different ways to do this, and they are somewhat
exclusive. If you use xauthority, then each machine you have the same
home directory on (NFS mounted) you will be able to use the display
without doing any other commands (unless you have used xhost). xhost
allows you to specify which hosts are allowed to use the display. This
means anyone on the host can use it and that you can't if you haven't
given the remote host permission.
