I missed what OS you're running on, but I know that under the HPUX
CDE you can create a two-line file called ~/.dtprofile containing:
<blank line>
SESSIONTYPE=xdm
And it will pass control to your .xsession after you log in. Give it
a try, perhaps it will work on your system.
