Sounds like some kind of colormap issue -- the "Device" section of your
/etc/X11/XF86Config might be relevant.

I do not see that problem on Red Hat 6.2 with "Fvwm Version 2.2.4
compiled on Feb 4 2000 at 03:41:44" and this /etc/X11/XF86Config entry
