Thanks to everyone who replied! THere was indeed an escape sequence, buried
inside the .login file inside a switch statement...d'oops!

What I'm actually doing here is taking a look at our default dot files that
are distributed to new users, trying to dig out from several generations of
accumulated cruft. There's all sorts of weird stuff in here.

(I'm also having to make them compatible with two different generations of
fvwm installed in two different places....)
