When you have multiple platforms, the need to conserve disk space, and the
ability to easily back out of new versions of an application, the above
sort of configuration is needed.

I have found that with most Imake configured programs they insist in
installing directly into your X11 directories, which on our systems
are not writeable by normal users.
I think a big problem with Imake'd programs is that they don't come with
documentation on how to configure installation locations etc (Fvwm is a
noteable exception here :-) whereas Autoconf one do.
