Sorry, I am going a little too fast. What I also did is remove
these lines from icons.c:

around line 787.

          XSelectInput(dpy, t->w, eventMask & ~StructureNotifyMask);
          XUnmapWindow(dpy, t->w);

(Still just unmapping the frame.)
