I noticed it right away because I wasn't setting 'style "*" color' to
anything and all of a sudden my icon titles were hard to see.

I think announcing that it is running without a config is good. I
still think fvwm administrators should start fvwm2 with a shell and
create a default config if the user doesn't have one. Without the
shell, you still can't upgrade from version to version without a lot
of problems.

I had a feeling it was partly my terminal, although I have a large Sun
terminal with good resolution, I doubt that colors are consistent from
terminal to terminal.

The "wheat" looks good and the "lightgrey" looks better. If I get to
vote for white, wheat and lightgrey, I vote for lightgrey.
