If you're talking about Sun's, you may be lucky.
I've never investigated it, but there's a modified X11R6 server available
in the R6 contrib tree called Xvan. Here's the top of the README:
README file for Xvan 1.2 (X11/R6 multiple screen server)
Peter C. Jones, Sun Microsystems Laboratories, Chelmsford, MA
last updated June 1995
This is the README file for the X11/R6 version of the Xvan server.
This latest release features a couple of bug fixes and the necessary
updates to remain consistent with patch level 11 of the X11/R6
distribution.
Xvan is a modification of the X11/R6 sample server that allows
multiple physical screens to comprise one logical screen. It is
currently only fully implemented for Sun workstations, so there is
only one machine-specific subdirectory, "sun", in the "hw" branch of
the source tree. However, for any other machine that could use the
code in the standard "mfb" and "cfb*" directories, it should be rather
simple to port Xvan functionality.
If my reading of this is correct, fvwm (or any window manager) running on top
of this will think that there's only one screen and will do just what you want.
