Hm, the following works for me:
AddToMenu bgPics "Pictures" Title
+ "Lips" Exec xv -root -slow24 -quit -rmode 1 $HOME/Xstuff/pics/lips.gif &
+ "Daffy" Exec xv -root -slow24 -quit $HOME/Xstuff/pics/daffy1.gif &
