FVWM: help on broken core files

Mm. You need to recompile gdb.

Aha. You are using a new(er) gcc/egcs version. I remember reading something about
cleverer management of symbol tables in the last release (2.95.?)

Probably you'll need an updated version of gdb... AND of binutils (perhaps
upgrading this one will suffice).
